There are ways to determine whether or not you're a moderate or heavy drinker too. Moderate drinkers can have one to two drinks a day depending on gender and people who are 65 years and older cannot have more than one a day. Although drinking moderately can still cause problems. If someone is considered a moderate drinker, drinking alcohol too fast can cause health problems later in life. Yes, staying within low risk levels is VERY healthy and should be followed, but other aspects of how you drink needs to be thought of just as much as the amount. For women, heavy drinking is considered seven drinks per week, while men can have up to fourteen drink per week. Heavy drinkers have a higher risk of developing alcohol problems.
Binge drinking is where the real danger is at. In just two hours, for women, having four or more drinks and five or more, for men, is considered binge drinking. Though binge drinkers can go days without drinking anything, once they start they can't stop. They have a HUGE risk of becoming dependent on alcohol and abusing it. They are much more likely to develop a drinking problem, due to the amount they drink. Often counseling and letting the drinker talk about the issues at hand helps; medication can also help.
A lot of people actually don't even fit the criteria for having an alcoholic problem. This is just to get all of you thinking and understanding how to safely avoid having any issues in the future.

ReplyDeleteThis is so informative and very interesting. I like how you made it a point that social drinking is a lot different than having a problem. after reading, i feel like a lot of college students do have a problem. Some people drink and get completely drunk or blacked out ever wednesday-saturday night. This post could really open someones eyes & make them more attentive to the amount they are consuming. Great post!

ReplyDeleteDrinking can affect your life in many ways. Alcohol is a social norm in college, but i do not believe college students fit the criteria for being an alcoholic. I think this is a great post and will be beneficial to people who drink. It will also help them be mindful of how much they drink and what they drink.
ReplyDeleteDrinking can affects a person liver. I known two people who have died due to liver damage. Drinking so much can really affect a person over all. I mean like drinking is okay , but it a certain amount a person should drink before they should stop.. Taking breaks from drinking should also be put into play with dealing liquor.
ReplyDeleteI think that is crazy that four drinks in two hours for women is considered binge drinking...I call that a good night! Just kidding but still that seems sort of crazy. I work with a lot of alcohol withdrawal patients and it is definitely crazy how someone can act when they stop drinking. Seeing patients like this has shaped my drinking behaviors and I take in consideration how often I drink and how much. Great post!
ReplyDeleteThis is full of important info. The difference between social drinking and binge drinking is major.
